A singular
stylist, Malaby brings a wide range of expression to the tenor saxophone
tradition. A vociferous soloist with a keen ear for structural dynamics, he
tempers his explosive angularity with virtuosic embouchure control, pushing
beyond conventional tonality with a subtly expansive harmonic palette.
Saxophonist Tony Malaby
is rapidly becoming one of the most impressive artists of his generation. With
a resume including memberships in Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra and Paul
Motian's Electric Bebop Band, he has gone from ubiquitous to acclaimed,
seemingly overnight.
Originally from Tucson, Arizona ,Tony Malaby has been permanently
based in New York since 1995 and has been a member of many notable jazz groups
including Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop
Band, Mark Helias' Open Loose, Fred Hersch's quintet and Walt Whitman project,
Michell Portal's Birdwatcher, various projects with Daniel Humair and bands led
by Mario Pavone, Tim Berne, Chris Lightcap, Kris Davis, Angelica Sanchez,
Michael Attias and Marty Ehrlich.
